On September 9th-14th traditional 8th International Conference “Nanomaterials: Applications & Properties – 2018” took place on the shore of the Black Sea in Zatoka, Odesa region. The initiator of this event – the Faculty of Electronics and Informational Technologies of Sumy State University.

During 6 days the following reports were granted a hearing: four plenary reports, 23 – invited, 55 verbal presentations and introduced more than 120 poster reports. Special attention was given to plenary reports of Prof. Gerrit Bauer from the University of Material Science of Tohoku University (Japan), who made a presentation about future perspectives of nanostructured yttrium-iron garnets in spintronics; Prof. Yurii Gogotsi (Drexel University, USA), who spoke about new class 2D compounds called MXenes; Prof. James Morris from Portland State University (USA) presented the report on modern methods of nanostructure generating. Professor Andre Anders from Leibniz Institute of Surface Engineering (Germany) spoke with two lectures: his first report outlined current state of plasma and ion beam tools to engineer surfaces and coatings and as a Chief Editor of Journal of Applied Physics (AIP Publishing) presented educational lecture regarding preparation of scientific articles.

Apart from that, the round table meeting was held on the topic “Future of Ukrainian Science & Education” with participation of the Deputy Minister of Education & Science of Ukraine, Prof. Maksym Strikha; Deputy Head of Scientific Committee of the National Council on Science and Technology of Ukraine, Prof. Oleksii Kolezhuk; Deputy Head of the Council of Young Scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Junior Research Assistant Yuliia Bezvershenko and Director of the Nanomaterials Institute of Drexel University (USA), Prof. Yurii Gogotsi (according to Scopus database h-index is 106, the most cited scientist of Ukrainian origin). Also, the discussion was participated by the Chief Editor of Journal of Applied Physics (USA), Prof. Andre Anders and Prof. James Morris – Deputy Director of IEEE community.

According to the Memorandum signed with community of “Institute of Electrotechnics and Electronics Engineers”, the conference works, that meet the IEEE requirements, will be published in the digest of the 8th International Conference “Nanomaterials: Applications & Properties” and indexed by Scopus database and WoS Core Colletion. Also selected articles will be published in thematic edition “Trends in Novel Magnetic Materials& Spin-related Phenomena at Nanoscale” of the scientific journal “The journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials” (Elsevier) IF (2017) = 3.06 and as a monograph of the Springer Nature publishing house edited by Prof. Oleksandr Pogrebniak (SSU) and Prof. Valentyn Novosad (Argonne National Laboratory, USA).

After the Conference finished, the best verbal and poster reports were awarded with a special prize “Rising Star in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology” and with prize money in amount of 100 USD. Apart from that, due to attraction of grant funds (the USA Embassy in Ukraine) and from sponsors (Angstrom Engineering Inc., STAR Cryoelectronics LLC, AJA International Inc., attocube AG, Quantum Opus LLC, Bruker BioSpin), this year it was managed to provide more than 50 travel-grants for young scientists in amount of 5000 UAH.

The Conference was participated by scientists and PhD students from three SSU faculties and institutes – Faculty of Electronics and Informational Technologies, Faculty of Technical Systems and Energy Efficient Technologies and Medical Institute. The SSU delegation was one of the biggest. Due to opportunities given by the Conference, new joint scientific groups and cooperation with leading Western scientific institutions will be created soon.

In total, more than 250 participants (more than 100 – foreigners) from 27 world countries took part in the Conference. In particular, from Poland, Belarus, USA, Germany, Japan, China, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Canada, France, Turkey etc. The representatives of Switzerland, Sweden and Estonia took part in the Conference for the first time.
