Students of Sumy State University took part in the 64th Kubota Annual All-Star Karate Championship, being on board of the All-Ukrainian Karate Association "IKA Gosoku Ryu Budo" team. It was held last weekend in Warsaw. The organizer of the tournament President of the International Karate Association Takayuki Kubota was present at the event.

The Ukrainians made their debut in the tournament with a splendid result, winning 34 medals, 12 of which were gold. The representatives of Sumy region won eleven medals: 2 golden, 6 silver and 3 bronze.

Artur Ponomariov, a student of Konotop College of SSU, won the 1st place in kumite among men in the absolute category. He won another silver medal in the competition of kata Gosoku. Also, Artur got a certificate on the international 2 dan (degree) of karate personally from Soku Kubota.

Master degree student of Academic and Research Institute of Finance, Economics and Management of SSU Maryna Prokopenko became second twice, winning silver medal in kata Gosoku and in the absolute category of kata.

Soke Kubota noted the high level of the Ukrainian team and agreed to hold the next 6th International Soke Kubota Cup tournament in Sumy in October, 2018, and confirmed his arrival as an honored guest.

The 1st Kubota All-Star Karate Championship was held in Tokyo, 1953. All subsequent tournaments from 1954 to 2017 were held in Los Angeles with participation of such stars as Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee.
