American university professor will lecture in SSU

Professor Joseph Kush from the Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the USA will work in Sumy State University for ten months. Professor will offer his learning experience to the students of the Department of Germanic Philology, focusing on evaluation and psychometrics.

The 3rd year students of the major “Translation” of SSU Anastasiia Korotun and Marharyta Polupan merged into a team, volunteering at the English speaking “Camp Excite “Colors of Diversity” for children, organized by the volunteers of the Peace Corps (USA) and the European Voluntary Service (EVS) under support of the Center for European Initiatives.

The future translators spent two days at School №2, Sumy, among the most active pupils of our town. The organizers of the Camp made 4 children project groups on various topics: “Language and multiculturalism”, “Gender and human’s social role”, “Diversity in action”, “Race, ethnicity, affiliation of intersectional activities”. Volunteers talked about such important concepts as respect, stereotypes, conflicts and their transformations, diversity as a preference, etc. during the work of the project groups. The education process was based on informal learning tools. Students shared their experiences and engaged children into discussion.

The team of the students worked together with the volunteers from Portugal, USA, Italy, and Brazil. Girls had a good opportunity to improve their language and translation skills. They prepared games, workshops and quests as well as worked as the translators for children.
