On April 25th, 2016 SSU held the event ‘Bells of Chernobyl’ dedicated to the 30th anniversary of tragic event – the catastrophic nuclear accident that happened at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The event was organized by Department of Extracurricular Activities and Library of SSU.

SSU paid the tribute to those people deceased during the liquidation of the nuclear accident and its terrible consequences by lighting candles and sorrowful moment of silence. The names of the firefighters who first rushed defending the whole world from the tragedy – Volodymyr Pravyk, Viktor Kibenko, Mykola Vashchuk, Vasyl Ihnatenko, Mykola Hitenko, and Volodymyr Tyshchura were mentioned with honor and respect.

SSU students watched the news footage of those events. The special atmosphere of the event was created by the musical accompaniment, during which the members of literary society called ‘Kraiany’ – the first-year students of the Faculty of Foreign Philology and Social Communications including Yuliia Lazutkina, Iryna Bilyk, Anastasiia Hudylina, and Oksana Voloshenko, read poems about the Chernobyl disaster.

The participants of the event noted that the Chernobyl tragedy constantly reminds everyone of responsibility to future generations by preserving the environment and preventing ecological disasters.

Due to the information event ‘Bells of Chernobyl’ the young people got to know the true facts about the tragic events that occurred on April 26th thirty years ago. This information will allow them to size up the real situation and pass from generation to generation the memory of people died innocently in the fight against environmental catastrophe, respect the environment and preserve it for the sake of our future.
