According to the updated version of the 4 International Colleges & Universities Ranking (January, 2016) Sumy State University takes the fourth position among the Ukrainian universities. The 4ICU, the Australian company with the same name, has been publishing its rating starting from 2005, estimating web popularity over 11,000 world universities and more than 130 Ukrainian universities.

The authors of the ranking believe that in such a way international students, teachers and researchers can easily find out how popular a certain university is.

The ranking uses the indicators on citations and frequency of visiting the official web-sites of the world universities. The databases of international Internet giant Google, the American company Alexa Internet (Amazon subsidiary company) and the British company Majestic-12 serve as the sources of information.

National Technical University of Ukraine (Kyiv), National Mining University (Dnipropetrovsk) and National Aviation University (Kyiv) have been included to the Top-4 too.

This year's ranking methodology has been changed, which caused the significant changes in the positions of some universities. The Head of the Center for Webometrics and Web Marketing of Sumy State University Dmytro Filchenko has been eager to comment on the situation. He stresses out that this year the rating methodology has been reinforced by the new Referring Subnets index (the number of different IPv4 addresses-sources of links with the accuracy of the first three octets), having replaced Referring Domains index (the number of different domains-sources of links). The new index is believed to be less vulnerable to possible artificial effects on the rating caused by self-citation. This index is also used by Google.

As it has been mentioned before, SSU takes the fifth place among Ukrainian universities according to Webometrics Ranking, which also uses web-indexes in order to estimate universities’ activities.
