In 1991 in Sumy State University was founded the Department for Work with Foreign Citizens (since April 2009 – Department for International Education (DIE). More than 1500 students, clinical ordinators, postgraduate students from the countries of the Middle East, South-Eastern Asia and Africa, the CIS and Russia have been studying at the department during this time.
In 2009/2010 academic year more than 700 foreign students have begun their studying, in that number 31 student of the CIS studying at the daily department and 27 students at correspondent department. At present time in the University study students from different countries: Australia, Azerbaijan, Albania, Algeria, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Great Britain, Ghana, Egypt, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe, India, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Cameroon, Kenya, China, Congo, Côd’Ivoire, Lebanon, Libya, Lithuania, Mauritius, Malaysia, Morocco, Mongolia, Nigeria, Germany, Norway, Pakistan, Palestine, Syria, Somali, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Turkey, Tunis, Uganda, Sri-Lanka, Byelorussia, Kazakhstan, Moldavia, Russia, Turkmenistan and Sweden.
Training at the University is held in Ukrainian, Russian and English languages. Training in English language (for students of the Medical Faculty) was applied in 2004 and today at the Medical Faculty study 274 foreigners in English language of training and in Russian language – 112 foreign students.
In 2009/2010 academic year in the University will start training with English language of instruction on the specialities of the Faculty of Economy and Management: “Management of Organizations” and “Marketing”, and since 2010/1011 academic year – on the speciality “Informatics”.
Since 2006 SSU turned to educational process organization according to credit-module system with appraisal plan ESTC (European Credit Transfer System), which is one of the main stages of integration into European educational expenses, that allow graduates of higher educational establishments to be competitive at the labour-market and decide a point concerning educational documents recognition.
Today are concluded international treaties about mutual recognition and equivalency of educational documents and scientific status between governments of the following countries: Russian federation, Byelorussia, Moldavia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Hungary, Slovakia, Rumania, China, Bulgaria, Estonia.
Medical institute of our University is included to the list of higher educational schools of International Medical Educational Dictionary, and Diplomas of graduates are certificated by Educational Commission for Foreign Graduates (United States of America).
Since July 2009 Medical Institute of Sumy State University is included the list of higher educational institutions of AVICENNA Directories Database by World Health Organizations (http://avicenna.ku.dk/database/WHO_directory/ )
All specialities of the Faculty of Economy and Management are certificated by International Education Society Ltd. (Great Britain). International certificate received after graduating from the university gives the opportunity to the bearer to achieve better results in job searching in the international and domestic job markets, providing employers with relevant information, which is usually not included in a school report or another certificate.

Also foreign students may continue their studying in the clinical ordinatura and post-graduate courses.
At the Department for International Education is keeping the following pedagogic work:
- general university activities;
- thematic meetings;
- literary soirees, dancing parties, competitions;
- social, international activities, study of local lore;
- international relations with youth of Sumy region;
- participation in national holidays celebrating;
- excursions (special attention is given to excursions around the university).
At the Department were established student autonomous bodies, the main aim of which is to help in deciding questions of foreign students’ studying and spare time organization. Today we have students’ national associations (Nigerian, Tanzanian, Cameroonian, Arabian etc.) which effective cooperate with the university’s administration and help new students arriving for studying quickly adopt to our country and society.
Meetings with representatives of law machinery and police have become traditional. The main purpose of these meetings is examination of foreign students with commonly accepted norms of behavior, law of Ukraine, regulations about studying of foreign countries citizens in Ukraine, rules of routine of educational establishment and hostel, and also organization of students’ spare time and rest during holidays and out-of-school time during academic year.
Preparatory Faculty of the Department for International Education
Studying at Sumy State University for foreign students begins at the Preparatory Faculty. This is the base for whole future training.
At the Preparatory Faculty works experienced teachers of Russian language, which own a unique methodic of teaching, constantly improve and modernize it, that gives an opportunity for foreign students quickly master the language (Russian or Ukrainian at students’ option).
The training process at the Preparatory Faculty is provided also by teachers of general not specialized subjects, who have a rich experience of work with foreigners both individually and in the context of standard educational programs, which are considered for different terms.
The profiles of training at the Preparatory Faculty:
- medical-biological;
- engineering-technical;
- humanitarian;
- economical.
Due to distribution by profiles students have an opportunity to generalize and systematize their knowledge in general not specialized subjects according to profile they’ve chosen.
All students of the Preparatory Faculty are provided with hostel.
With the purpose to assign the Preparatory Faculty graduates to the University are holding excursions to the Medical, Engineering and Economical faculties, meetings with teachers and senior students of these faculties.
In order to help in solving different students’ problems with each group works a curator. Curators of groups helps in solving difficult problems of adaptation: unusual nature area, nutrition, living in the hostel, relations with representatives of other nationalities, citizens, arrangement of their way of life in Ukraine.
After successful graduating from the Preparatory Faculty graduates get the Certificate which gives them an opportunity to continue studying at any higher educational institution of Ukraine, Russia and Byelorussia.
The term of training at the preparatory courses is 10 months. The training begins in September-November.
A hostel, a library, reading-halls, a cafe, a dining-room, gymnasiums and stadiums, a swimming-pool are at the students' service.
Conditions of admission to Sumy State University:
To enter the Preparatory Faculty of the Department for International Education or the first course of the Medical Faculty (English language of training) a candidate for studying must send an application by post or Internet to the Department’s Office in order to get the official invitation and collect the legalized in established order the following documents:
- copy of Certificate about secondary education;
- medical certificate, certified by the country’s official health authorities;
- copy of birth certificate;
- insurance policy on rendering emergency medical aid to foreign citizens;
- 6 photos size 40 x 60 mm;
- a return ticket with open data date with term for 1 (one) year to go back home, if it’ll be necessary.
National passport is given personally.
The testing is foreseen for candidates to study at the Medical Faculty (English language of training) in order to determine the English language knowledge.
For candidates to study at master courses or post-graduate courses the procedure of nostrification of educational documents (got in other country) in Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine is foreseen.
The period of entrance for studying – from August 15 till November 15.
